Chelsea and United go two from two

Chelsea and Manchester United are the only teams with a perfect record after two weeks of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The reigning champions continued their perfect start to life under Sonia Bompastor with a 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on Friday, while United got the better of Everton 1-0 on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Manchester City and Arsenal each recorded their first wins of the campaign, both 1-0 against Brighton and Leicester City respectively.

The remaining two games were drawn, West Ham coming from behind for a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, while Aston Villa and Tottenham played out an entertaining 90 minutes and could not be split, the game finishing 2-2.

Blues in seventh heaven at Palace

Chelsea made it two wins from two in emphatic fashion as they romped to a 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd put Aggie Beever-Jones in for the first goal late in the first half, and then after the break, Chelsea ran riot.

Lucy Bronze finished beautifully to make it two shortly after half-time before Lauren James was on hand to tap home Mayra Ramirez’s low cross on the hour.

The final quarter of the game was one-way traffic as Guro Reiten grabbed two goals, with Nathalie Bjorn and Catarina Macario also getting on the scoresheet, with Chelsea now two from two and yet to concede this season.

Shaw gets City off the mark with battling win

A goal just before half-time from Bunny Shaw got Manchester City a first win of the campaign as they beat Brighton 1-0.

Gareth Taylor’s team could have won much more comfortably, but struggled to take their chances, with Shaw going close twice before she finally did break the deadlock.

It came after a good run in behind down the left from Kerstin Casparij, and her ball across goal was steered home by Shaw.

City welcomed back Jill Roord for the first time since she tore her ACL back in January, but they struggled to put the result to bed, missing a number of chances in a second half they dominated.

Gunners edge home thanks to Maanum

Frida Maanum scored the only goal to give Arsenal a first win of the season away, winning 1-0 away to Leicester City.

Having drawn 2-2 with Manchester City in their opening game, the Gunners were on top for much of the first half at the King Power Stadium, but could not find the breakthrough.

It finally came 10 minutes into the second half, with Maanum finding the net from close range from Alessia Russo’s cross into the box.

While it was a deserved lead, Leicester had chances to grab an equaliser, with Yuka Momiki just off-target with one long-range effort before Daphne van Domselaar denied both Janice Cayman and Shana Chossenotte.

Clinton comes back to haunt former club

Grace Clinton’s goal after just four minutes was the difference as Manchester United beat her former club Everton 1-0.

The 21-year-old got off the mark on her debut last week against West Ham United and found the net again here against the Toffees.

Clinton pounced on a pass from Justine Vanhaevermaet and drove forward before firing home the opener.

United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce had to alert as she made important saves from Karoline Olesen and Inma Gabarro – the latter then stretchered off after falling awkwardly.

Everton could not find a way back into the game and are still searching for a first point after two games, while United are now two from two.

Ueki grabs late point for Hammers

West Ham picked up their first point of the season thanks to a late goal from Riko Ueki in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

The Japanese international headed home with five minutes remaining to cancel out Olivia Smith’s opener for the Reds.

Canada youngster Smith, who is Liverpool’s record signing after joining this summer, had opened the scoring on seven minutes, a fine curling strike nestling in the corner.

She created another chance shortly after, but West Ham grew into the game and were well worth the draw when Ueki bravely beat Liverpool keeper Rachel Laws to nod home the equaliser.

England rescues Spurs in thriller

Bethany England’s goal deep into stoppage time denied Aston Villa a comeback victory in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Eveliina Summanen had put Tottenham in front from the penalty spot midway through the first half, making no mistake after Drew Spence had been fouled.

Villa battled hard for an equaliser and eventually came 12 minutes from time when Adriana Leon repaid the faith of manager Robert de Pauw for bringing her on. She curled the ball home to level matters before Rachel Daly put Villa ahead.

Spurs keeper Becky Spencer was struggling with her movement because of an injury, and could not get to Daly’s headed effort.

But just as it seemed that Villa would come away with all three points, England popped up at the near post to head in an equaliser to keep Tottenham unbeaten.
