Arsenal began WSL life after Jonas Eidevall with a win but needed two second-half goals to get over the line at West Ham.
Earlier on Sunday, Lauren Hemp starred as Manchester City produced yet another comeback win over winless Villa, while Sunday’s late game saw Chelsea sparkle against Spurs.
Elsewhere, Leicester bagged their first win of the season over Everton, whilst there were 1-1 draws between Brighton and Manchester United as well as Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
Arsenal leave it late
Arsenal were made to work for their 2-0 win at West Ham in their first WSL match since Jonas Eidevall resigned as manager.
They struggled to make an impression in the first half as Kinga Szemik starred in goal for the Hammers.
However, interim coach Renee Slegers made a quadruple change in the second half, including introducing Stina Blackstenius and Rosa Kafaji, who made an instant impact.

Blackstenius won a penalty with 20 minutes remaining, which Mariona Caldentey duly converted to give the Gunners the lead.
Kafaji then got her first Arsenal goal late on with a smart first-time finish to give them their first league win this month.
Five-star Chelsea fizzle against Spurs
Johanna Rytting Kaneryd struck twice as Chelsea stormed to a 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final game of the weekend.
Maika Hamano opened the scoring on 10 minutes, netting for the second game running against Spurs.
It was an eventful half for Amanda Nildén who equalised for the visitors before putting through her own net on the stroke of half time as Chelsea reclaimed the lead.
That was how it stayed until the 70th minute when Rytting Kaneryd volleyed home spectacularly from Millie Bright’s floated cross.

Guro Reiten then hit the post from the penalty spot but Sandy Baltimore reacted quickest to put daylight between the sides.
Eveliina Summanen’s superb free-kick gave Spurs late hope but Rytting Kaneryd had the final say, lashing from a tight angle to round off an excellent evening for the Blues at Kingsmeadow.

Parris rescues point for Brighton
Nikita Parris scored against her former club as Brighton drew 1-1 at home to Manchester United.
Grace Clinton gave the Red Devils an early lead at the Amex Stadium when she converted Celin Bizet’s cross.
United continued to dominate the first half as Clinton’s curling strike hit the crossbar before Hinata Miyazawa’s rebound was well saved by Sophie Baggaley.

However, Brighton grew into the game and equalised through Parris’s tap-in at the start of the second half.
It was the first goal that United had conceded so far this season as neither side could find a winner in an even second half.
Another City comeback sinks Villa
Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord scored in the second half as Manchester City beat Aston Villa 2-1 to go top.
Gabi Nunes gave Villa a surprise lead when she converted Kirsty Hanson’s cross with an improvised flick.
However, Hemp’s equally audacious hook over her shoulder helped City draw level midway through the second half.
Villa keeper Sabrina D’Angelo was out of position after she flapped at the cross, allowing Hemp to finish with the goal gaping.
Eight minutes later, Roord produced a clinical finish inside the box to preserve City’s unbeaten start to the season whilst Villa stay winless.

Palace secure valuable point
Crystal Palace fought hard for a priceless point in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.
Katie Stengel gave Palace the lead against her former club, tapping home after a goalmouth scramble inside 15 minutes.
The Eagles continued to push for a second, but Liverpool hit them on the counter through Cornelia Kapocs, who produced a tidy finish after Mia Enderby’s shot was saved.

Palace looked more likely to find a winner and Stengel was at the centre of everything, spurning a great opportunity before having a shot cleared off the line.
Despite a scare late on when Olivia Smith hit the post from range for Liverpool, Palace were able to hold on to a deserved point.
Leicester off the mark
Leicester City picked up their first win of the season as they triumphed 1-0 at home against Everton as the Toffees dropped to the bottom of the table.
Nicole Momiki slalomed her way through the Everton defence and produced a fine finish to open the scoring ten minutes in.

The Toffees pushed hard but were unable to convert any of their chances and remain winless after five WSL matches.
