Barclays Women’s Championship league and cumulative attendance records broken

The Women’s Professional Leagues (WPLL) can confirm that both the Barclays Women’s Championship’s league and cumulative attendance records have been broken over the past two match weekends.

With 132,280 fans having watched a game in the Barclays Women’s Championship in 2023/24, that number has been shattered with 21 matches still to go, with the latest round of fixtures bringing the overall figure up to 187,859.

All of this comes courtesy of a series of impressive attendances across the division, including 7,012 at Southampton’s game against Sunderland in January, 11,620 for Newcastle United against Southampton in November, and 15,387 at the Stadium of Light for a North East derby between the Magpies and the Mackems in October.

Newcastle United meanwhile have now taken the mantle of the league’s record attendance from neighbours Sunderland however, with 38,502 packing into St James’ Park on Sunday to see the home side run out 1-0 winners courtesy of Shania Hayles’ second half strike.

The fixture was the highest attended game in both divisions across the most recent match weekend (March 22-23), with Arsenal against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in the Barclays WSL just behind, drawing in a crowd of 35,628.
