Birmingham City strike twice late to keep up title challenge

Birmingham City celebrate

Birmingham City struck twice late to move within two points of league leaders London City Lionesses after a 3-1 win over Durham.

It was the perfect response to London City Lionesses’ 4-1 win over Southampton on Friday night.

Elsewhere, outside challengers Charlton Athletic lost further ground on the top two with a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, while Bristol City and Portsmouth also shared the spoils.

Sheffield United stayed rooted to the bottom of the table after a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Magical Magill bags Blues brace

Birmingham City kept up their title challenge with a 3-1 defeat of Durham.

Mollie Lambert put Durham in front as she drilled home from just inside the box following a corner but Simone Magill responded just four minutes later with a close-range header.

The Northern Ireland international got her second with 10 minutes left to play when she rounded Rylee Foster before firing into the net.

Emily Van Egmond then finished the job four minutes later with her first goal for the club.

Lionesses roar past Southampton

Isobel Goodwin’s hat trick helped leaders London City Lionesses stay at the summit courtesy of a 4-1 win away at Southampton.

The striker took just four minutes to open her account before adding a second midway through the first half.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah added a third on the stroke of half time before Molly Pike got one back for Southampton.

But the day was all about Goodwin, who ensured she would be taking home the match ball with her third of the evening just after the hour mark.

It means London City remain two points clear at the top of the table ahead of the final two matches.

Hayles rescues Lasses

A Shania Hayles penalty rescued a point for Newcastle after a 1-1 draw to Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

Jodie Hutton fired the hosts into the lead from the edge of the area after 24 minutes and the Addicks came close to doubling their lead when Ellie Brazil found herself one-on-one with Claudia Moan just ahead of the interval, only to be denied by the Newcastle ‘keeper.

The Lasses levelled the scores just after the hour mark when Charlotte Newsham was judged to have brought down Beth Lumsden in the area, and Hayles made no mistake from the spot.

The result sees Charlton seven points adrift of the league summit in third while Newcastle remain in sixth.

Blades stay bottom

Sheffield United remain bottom of the Championship standings after a goalless draw with fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers.

Leanne Cowan came close to heading the Blades into the lead when she met Abbie Lafayette’s freekick but she was only able to steer her effort wide of the posts.

Down the other end of the pitch, Rovers fullback Hannah Luke rattled the crossbar after rifling an effort from distance.

The two sides had played out a six-goal thriller in their most recent meeting last December but both defences stood tall at Bramall Lane as the two teams were forced to share the spoils.
