Champions Chelsea complete unbeaten season while Arsenal seal second

Aggie Beever-Jones

Women’s Super League Champions Chelsea rounded off their season in style by becoming the first side to go through a 22-game league season unbeaten and the fourth to complete an invincible campaign after brushing past Liverpool.

Only three other sides had gone through a season undefeated – Arsenal (2012), Manchester City (2016) and the Blues themselves (2017-18) – but no team had done it over 22 games until Sonia Bompastor’s contingent this campaign.

Little had separated Chelsea from Liverpool at Stamford Bridge until Aggie Beever-Jones’ last-minute effort clinched all three points to kickstart celebrations in West London.

Arsenal sealed second place with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United and Manchester City came from behind twice to defeat Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere saw Aston Villa and Leicester City secure wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United respectively while Everton were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur.

Blues become Invincible

Aggie Beever-Jones struck a minute into injury-time to secure all three points for Chelsea as the Blues became the first side to complete a 22-game league campaign undefeated after brushing past Liverpool.

With Stamford Bridge in a celebratory mood after the Blues confirmed their sixth successive title last week, the first chance of the game fell to Sonia Bompastor’s side when Aggie Beever-Jones’ attempt from the centre of the box was blocked amid a sea of red shirts.

Her teammate Sandy Baltimore came closest to breaking the deadlock with a left-footed effort that she could only steer wide of the posts while Liverpool’s Taylor Hinds would have sent her side into the lead had her direct free-kick not sailed over the bar.

But the spoils would go Chelsea’s way after Beever-Jones completed a counter-attacking move when she latched onto Ashley Lawrence’s incisive pass before firing into the net to secure her side’s place in history.

Gunners seal second place

Arsenal secured a second-place finish after an enthralling win over closest challengers Manchester United at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners took the lead when United failed to clear their lines from Alessia Russo’s cross, with Chloe Kelly in acres of space before firing into the net

Ella Toone levelled the scores when she rose highest to head home but her side fell behind again after the break when Mariona Caldentey converted a penalty not long into the second half.

Gunners midfielder Frida Maanum then capped her 150th appearance for the North Londoners with a curled finish before her captain Kim Little made it four.

A goal each from Red Devils duo Elisabeth Terland and Maya Le Tissier looked to set up a grandstand finish but Arsenal held on to seal second place.

City down Eagles

A brace each from Rebecca Knaak and Kerolin Nicoli helped Manchester City came from behind twice to defeat Crystal Palace 5-2.

Ashleigh Weerden fired Crystal Palace into an early after just four minutes of play before Nicoli restored parity for City when she volleyed the ball into the top right corner.

Mille Gejl then reasserted Palace’s control of the contest to put her side 2-1 up ahead of the break but City answered back with quickfire strikes from Jill Roord and Knaak after the hour mark to take the lead for the first time.

Knaak and Kerolin then clinched a double each late on to seal all three points for Nick Cushing’s side, who end their season in fourth.

Toffees and Spurs share the spoils

Veatriki Sarri sent Everton in front when her free-kick swerved past the visitors’ wall and beyond the reach of shotstopper Lize Kop.

Drew Spence brought her side level when she smashed home after reacting fastest to a loose ball in the box.
Teammate Jess Naz then forced a fine save from Toffees keeper Courtney Brosnan after meeting Beth England’s pull-back.

But there would not be enough to separate the two sides in the end as Tottenham ended their campaign on a run of 10 games without a win.

Villans vanquish Seagulls

Ebony Salmon put Villa out in front when she received the ball from Chasity Grant on the halfway line before dribbling the length of the Brighton half and firing into the bottom corner.

Rachel Daly doubled Villa’s advantage after poking home from Grant’s byline cross moments before the interval.

Maz Pacheco added a third with a first-time effort from inside the box to clinch all three points with Nikita Parris’ late effort merely a consolation. The result means Villa end the season with a fifth successive victory and climb into fifth place.

Foxes strike down Hammers

Hannah Cain’s double helped Leicester City defeat West Ham United 4-2.

Foxes skipper Janice Cayman led by example with a powerful effort from the edge of the box to hand her side the lead.

Cain further asserted the hosts’ control of the contest when she converted her rebound after Hammers keeper Kinga Szemik proved equal to her initial attempt.

Viviane Asseyi pulled one back for her side ahead of Cain’s second before bagging her own brace with a sublime free-kick.

Leicester’s Sam Tierney added a fourth with an expertly curled effort after spotting Szemik off her line.
