Chelsea stretch lead at the top with United victory

Chelsea moved five points clear at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League thanks to Guro Reiten’s first-half penalty in a 1-0 win over Manchester United

The only game of the weekend was a rearranged encounter from early October, and Chelsea took their chance to increase their lead over Manchester City with an eighth win from a possible eight.

They were pushed hard, but faced a United team who had conceded just twice all season prior to this.

The first goal came after 17 minutes, Reiten slotting her penalty home after Mayra Ramirez had been brought down by United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Playing with the wind, United were not able to put their attacking game in place, failing to record a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea could have stretched their lead in the second half, Maya le Tissier doing well to block Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

Instead, it was United who came very close to snatching a point when Melvine Malard struck the crossbar with an effort from the edge of the box.

The win is Chelsea’s 11th in a row in the competition dating back to last season, just one off the all-time record.
