City stay top with big win at Palace as Chelsea keep pressure on

Manchester City were unstoppable at Selhurst Park as they beat Crystal Palace 3-0 to stay top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Cross-city rivals Manchester United stayed unbeaten thanks to Melvine Malard’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

In the London derby at Brisbane Road, it was heartbreak for the Hammers as they lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur thanks to an own goal in added time.

Brighton continued their impressive form as they held off Leicester 1-0, while Liverpool claimed three points against Aston Villa.

And in the late game, Chelsea made it five wins from five with a X-X win over Everton, who are bottom.

United still unbeaten after Malard equaliser

Manchester United’s 100th match under head coach Marc Skinner ended in a draw against Arsenal.

Arsenal looked the better side for much of the game, and it was Alessia Russo who scored against her former team in the 63rd minute to open the scoring.

However, Melvine Malard tapped in a header from Rachel Williams to keep United’s game alive just 20 minutes later.

It was a record attendance of 8,348 at Leigh Sports Village, and they were treated to six minutes of added time as both teams scrabbled for another goal.

Neither side could manage it though, with United two points clear of their opponents on the day in fourth and fifth respectively.

Brighton maintain fine form with Foxes success

Brighton rose to second temporarily after their 1-0 home win against Leicester.

Despite the single goal, Brighton were dominant throughout the game with Nikita Parris scoring in the 20th minute to take the lead before the break.

Leicester’s Ruby Mace then managed to round keeper Sophie Baggaley but just could not keep the ball under control. They then lost defender Sam Tierney, who was stretchered off after a bad landing on her ankle.

That meant extended injury time, with the clock ticking up to triple digits but there was still no way through for the Foxes, as Brighton came away with all three points.

City take three points with three goals

Manchester City claimed their fifth consecutive win this season with their game against Crystal Palace, their first ever WSL matchup since the Eagles’ promotion last season.

From kick-off City were the stronger team, with multiple close calls from Bunny Shaw that kept goalie Shae Yanez on her toes.

It was midfielder Jess Park who broke the deadlock with a glorious shot from range, and Yanez could only watch it soar straight into the net.

That momentum continued after the break when Jill Roord found the back of the net, her second goal of the season.

Crystal Palace had a few genuine chances after a change in tactics and players, including a crack from Katie Stengel that hit the woodwork.

City were undeterred however with a third goal by an unmarked Shaw to rub salt in the wound.

Spurs stun Hammers in London derby

Tottenham took a late 2-1 win to compound West Ham’s woes after a tricky start to the season.

The Hammers surprised Tottenham with a first half header from Rico Ueki, who capitalised on Viviane Asseyi’s corner kick in their only shot on target.

Spurs responded in the second half in the 51st minute, captain Bethany England putting home a rebound from Matilda Vinberg to level.

And the Hammers saw their hopes of picking up anything from the game dashed when Camila Sáez knocked in an own goal in the second minute of added time to give Tottenham the victory.

Hinds at the double for Reds

Liverpool were ruthless in their match against Aston Villa to as Taylor Hinds scored twice in a 2-1 win.

Villa made a change in formation in a 3-5-2 in hopes of finding their first win this season, and Missy Bo Kearns faced her former childhood club for the first time in claret and blue.

But Liverpool produced a physical performance, and that paid off for captain Hinds to draw first blood 26 minutes in and score again unmarked in the 43rd minute.

Villa then reverted to a 4-2-3-1 at the break, getting themselves back into the game with a header from Gabi Nunes.

They pushed hard for an equaliser, with Rachael Laws having to be alert in the Liverpool goal as she made saves from Kirsty Hanson and Miri Taylor.

And though they threw everything at it, Liverpool were able to see out the win to go level with Arsenal on nine points.

Five-star Chelsea cruise past Everton

Chelsea remain just a point behind Manchester City, with a game in hand, after their thumping 5-0 win over Everton.

With three goals scored by half-time, they had the points wrapped up by the break, before boosting their goal difference in the second half.

That goal difference hurts the Toffees, who dropped below West Ham into 12th as a result of the loss.

Aggie Beever-Jones kicked things off as she guided Kadeisha Buchanan’s cross home with a powerful header.

Everton stayed in the battle but paid the price at the end of the half as Erin Cuthbert nicked in to pinch a ball and make it two.

And that was followed by a Guro Reiten goal in injury time to make the game secure.

The second half was cagey for long periods, but Chelsea finished with a flourish, Wieke Kaptein making it four with eight minutes remaining.

And there was time for one more, Oriane Jean-Francois breaking down the left before serving Ashley Lawrence, unmarked in the middle.
