West Ham hold Chelsea as Villa claim crucial win

Chelsea dropped points late on to West Ham United as Shekiera Martinez scored twice for the Hammers in a 2-2 draw.

Aston Villa claimed a crucial victory away to Liverpool while Crystal Palace suffered a heavy defeat to Arsenal in the Barclays Women’s Super League relegation battle.

The Gunners’ win, as well as Manchester United’s triumph over Everton and Manchester City’s victory away at Brighton & Hove Albion, ensured the rest of the top four won.

Chelsea held by West Ham

West Ham United stifled Chelsea’s march to a fifth straight WSL title with a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

It took Chelsea just 16 minutes to move ahead against West Ham, as Maika Hamano turned and volleyed home the opener at Kingsmeadow.

The Blues were extremely comfortable in the first half, and their dominance showed when Aggie Beever-Jones, one of seven changes for Chelsea, scored in the 21st minute.

West Ham regrouped and responded three minutes before the break as Shekiera Martinez fired the ball past Hannah Hampton.

She would do the same with a header in the 91st minute to earn an impressive point for West Ham and consign Chelsea to a third draw of the season.

Villa claim huge three points

Aston Villa came from behind to defeat Liverpool 2-1 and claim a massive win in the BWSL relegation battle.

Both teams took their time to kick into gear in St Helens, with Rachel Daly having the first shot on goal 21 minutes in with her attempt on a narrow angle stopped by Rachael Laws.

Down the other end, Sabrina D’Angelo was called into evasive action to deny an on-rushing Leanne Kiernan after a poorly weighted back pass from Maz Pacheco.

The game changed on 57 minutes as Marie Hobinger struck from the spot after Ceri Holland was fouled by D’Angelo in the area.

Hobinger’s penalty sparked Villa into life again and they got their breakthrough as substitute Kirsty Hanson fired past Laws from a narrow angle.

Villa heaped on the pressure from there on in and it finally told when sub Jenna Clark turned the goal into her own net to give the away side the victory.

Janssen and Clinton set up United win

Manchester United were clinical to defeat Everton 2-0 and keep pace in the title race.

The Toffees were the brighter side in the opening exchanges as Katja Snoeijs put the ball in the back of the net only two minutes in, but the goal was disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

However, Dominque Janssen pounced on an error from goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan to move her side into the lead on 22 minutes.

From there, the hosts were in the ascendancy, going close twice before half-time before breaking Everton’s resolve two minutes after the restart.

Leah Galton sent a low cross into the centre of the box, funding Grace Clinton who flicked the ball past Brosnan to double her side’s lead and secure the win.

City battle past Brighton

Manchester City put their Women’s Champions League defeat behind them with a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blues were then put under pressure early on as Yui Hasegawa was dispossessed by Fran Kirby, who found Nikita Parris.

The former City player’s shot from range went just wide to spare Hasegawa’s blushes.

Despite Brighton having the better of the first half, City took the lead on 37 minutes as Kerstin Casparij tapped home her first Women’s Super League goal.

City were forced into more defending in the second half, with Parris remaining a threat, with Michelle Agyemang also creating chances for the Seagulls.

Viviane Miedema moved the game out of sight in the 90th minute, with Charlize Rule’s goal proving a very late consolation for the hosts.

Leitzig helps Leicester to valuable point

Goalkeeper Janina Leitzig secured Leicester City a point in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur

Olivia Holdt was a livewire for Tottenham early on, forcing Leitzig into two saves before Martha Thomas tested the Leicester keeper with a fierce shot.

The away side were made to pay in the second half when former Foxes shotstopper Lize Kop parried a strong shot by Hannah Cain straight onto her own players, with Josefine Rybrink eventually directing the ball into her side’s net.

Spurs did not let their heads drop however as Jess Naz squared the ball to Drew Spence from the by-line, with Spence volleying home to draw level seven minutes later.

Leitzig proved the hero late on, tipping a shot from Matilda Vinberg behind before safely dealing with the corner to see the Foxes take a hard-fought-for point.

Mead’s milestone sees Arsenal past Palace

Arsenal took apart Crystal Palace in a 4-0 win to move back above Manchester United, with Beth Mead scoring twice.

After sustained early pressure, Mead got the first goal 14 minutes in, volleying home a cross from Chloe Kelly to net her 50th BWSL goal for Arsenal.

Arsenal doubled their lead 11 minutes later as Mariona Caldentey slotted a ball through to Alessia Russo who turned it in.

Kelly was a constant threat for Arsenal, and provided the third goal of the game as her shot was deflected in by Palace defencer Allyson Swaby in the second half.

Mead rounded out the result in injury time with a sliced shot past Shae Yanez to further compound the Eagles’ difficult day.
