Women’s League Cup: Quarter-final round-up as WSL quartet go through

Manchester City

There was plenty of action as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and West Ham United all advanced to the semi-finals of Women’s League Cup.

Manchester City took home bragging rights with victory over Manchester United while London trio Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham booked their tickets to the final four with victories over Durham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

Here’s how it all played out…

City’s derby delight

Manchester City avenged their derby defeat against Manchester United in the WSL last weekend by punching their ticket to the semi-final of the League Cup at their neighbours’ expense.

Laura Coombs broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when she fired past United shot-stopper Phallon Tullis-Joyce from close-range.

Millie Turner levelled the scores with a fine strike after City failed to clear their lines from Melvine Malard’s cross.

Lily Murphy restored the Citizens’ advantage on the stroke of half-time with an expertly placed shot into the bottom corner of the net to secure bragging rights for Gareth Taylor’s side as they move into the final four.

Blues deny Durham dreams

Chelsea took care of business at Kingsmeadow with a fine 5-0 win over Durham.

Aggie Beever-Jones put the Blues in front in the 21st minute with a fine header after latching onto Ashley Lawrence’s deflected cross.

Oriane Jean-François doubled Chelsea’s lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the box an hour into proceedings before quickfire strikes from Erin Cuthbert, Guro Reiten and Maika Hamano finished the job.

Gunners sweep aside Seagulls

A flurry of second-half goals saw Arsenal secure their place in the next round in style after a 4-0 defeat of Brighton & Hove Albion.

After a scoreless first-half, Frida Maanum gave the Gunners the lead in the 65th minute with a close-range finish.

Moments later, Arsenal extended their advantage through Katie McCabe, the Ireland captain firing past Melina Loeck before Krya Cooney-Cross added a third with an emphatic finish into the top corner not long after.

Substitute Mariona Caldentey then completed the scoring with an audacious lob from the edge of the area.

Hammers down Spurs

Goals from Seraina Plubel and Kirsty Smith helped West Ham into the final four after recording a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs took the lead after 10 minutes through Martha Thomas when the forward headed home from a set-piece to record her first goal of 2025.

Plubel equalised half an hour later after finishing off a well-rounded counterattacking move before Kirsty Smith completed the turnaround with a sublimely curled long-range free-kick.
